FibreCo breaks ground on its fibre optic cable network

At a sod turning held today in Bloemfontein, FibreCo Telecommunications (FibreCo) broke-ground to start the construction phase of its much anticipated long-distance fibre optic network, which is set to revolutionise telecommunications in South Africa. The Company will invest up to R5 billion in infrastructure over the next five years, with a vision of ultimately building a network of over 12,000 km.
Construction has commenced on a 2,000 km link between Johannesburg and Cape Town, to be connected through Bloemfontein, East London and Port Elizabeth, and providing access to a wide range of rural and smaller urban areas along the route.

Convergence Partners welcomes Derek Wilcocks as new CEO of Dimension Data Middle East Africa and Saki Missaikos as new MD of Internet Solutions

Allan Cawood, CEO of Dimension Data Middle East & Africa (MEA) has stepped down after serving the company since 2001 to pursue other personal and professional interests. Derek Wilcocks, Managing Director of Dimension Data’s wholly-owned Internet Solutions business, has been appointed to succeed Cawood as CEO with immediate effect. Saki Missaikos, currently Sales Director for Dimension Data MEA since 2003, will over the reins as Managing Director of Internet Solutions in Derek’s stead.
Convergence Partners wishes to take this opportunity to wish Allan well in his future endeavours and to thank and congratulate him on his solid stewardship of the business. During Allan’s tenure as CEO the business achieved three-fold revenue growth and doubled profits.

Internet Solution adds New Data Centre

Internet Solutions (IS), has reached the critical mass required to achieve economies of scale in terms of operational capabilities and cost savings with the addition of the new Randview data centre.
“Just about everything in the world today works more efficiently based on economies of scale, as provisioning, orchestration systems and services for more clients makes it cheaper,” says Graeme O’Driscoll, innovation & technology manager: cloud at IS. “With the addition of Randview to our data centre network we have hit the sweet spot in terms of capacity, which means we can start leveraging off of our economies of scale in terms of bulk power supply, space, cooling and human resources.”

Seacom to provide international connectivity to boost Mozambican research and education

Convergence Partners investee company, Seacom, has signed a 20-year connectivity agreement with the Mozambican Government to access international broadband fibre connectivity on its network to Europe and the rest of the world.

Dimension Data is South Africa’s largest IT services provider

Dimension Data, the global specialist IT solutions and services provider, has been positioned by BMI-TechKnowledge as the largest provider of IT services to the South African market.
“In its latest IT services market sizing and forecast of 2010-2015 report published in December 2011, BMI-T recognised that Dimension Data was still the largest provider of IT services in South Africa in 2010, accounting for 15.4% of the total IT services market, up from 14.8% in 2009,” the company said on Tuesday.

Dimension Data delivers double digit growth

Convergence Partners investee, Dimension Data, which was delisted about a year ago, after being bought out by Japan-based NTT in a R24.2 billion deal, reported double-digit top line growth for the year to September.
The company says revenue grew 14.8%, to $5.79 billion, from $4.74 billion for the 2010 financial year. It also reported double-digit operating profit growth of 10.8%.
