Howard Earley, COO of Plessey, a Convergence Partners investee says that Plessey has identified the opportunities that exist and need for a next-generation service provider with the ability to build the infrastructure required by the fast growing communications industry.

He says that Plessey is well positioned to fulfill this role due it being able to:

provide a comprehensive, solution themselves, thereby providing a broad, modular range of telecommunications solutions that keep pace with and can be very precisely mapped to the new opportunities opening up to customers; and

call, where relevant, on the global consulting and solutions design experience and capability of their parent company, Dimension Data, and also on the carrier, connectivity, and communications specialisations within Internet Solutions

The result of this unique positioning is that Plessey and Dimension Data are being commissioned to, respectively, project-manage the laying of fibre and provide the equipment to light up the fibre.

Seacom, a Convergence Partners investee company, has invested R100 million in additional South African infrastructure to meet the continuous high growth in demand for broadband services and applications. The investment includes the purchase of physical optical fibre links from Dark Fibre Africa (DFA) as well as installing the equipment required for Seacom to manage the network linking KwaZulu Natal’s coast where the Seacom marine cable lands to two redundant Points of Presence (PoPs) in Gauteng.

Initially, 100 Gigabit per second (Gb/s) of the fibre will be lit (using current 10 Gb/s technology) and a further 20 waves are expected to be lit within the next 12 months. Ultra-modern transmission technology is being used with 100 Gb/s per wavelength which gives the new link a design capacity of over 8 Terabit per second (Tb/s). This is in line with Seacom’s plans to expand the marine portion of the cable to over 4.8 Tb/s.

This enormous amount of capacity enables Seacom to align current and future customer needs with the explosion in broadband demand driven by a wave of content rich applications such as cloud computing to meet enterprise requirements, HD video streaming and IPTV services. This investment also supports Seacom’s recently launched Internet Protocol (IP) platform that will drive the proliferation of content created in Africa and the regional hosting of international content.

Brian Herlihy, Seacom CEO, said: “South Africa continues to offer tremendous growth opportunities and this investment confirms Seacom’s view that adequate infrastructure will ensure that the market can absorb new capacity within record time.

“In our continuous quest to improve quality of service, this is one of the many investments that we are making to ensure that we provide our customers with the best possible support as we continue to build the African Internet based on low-latency, high speed and reliable infrastructure.“

Managed by Seacom and its suppliers, the route is the company’s first co-build of this nature. It will be operated in parallel with Seacom’s existing routes and will provide customers with the benefit of protected services delivered across multiple, physically diverse routes and operated by multiple providers.

Suveer Ramdhani, Seacom’s Head of Product Strategy, said: “This new capacity will benefit the end user by enabling Seacom clients to bring new content rich products to market in a reliable and economical way.

“The scale of the capacity we are making available on the route is yet another first in Africa and you can expect us to continue rolling out more ground-breaking technological developments in the near future.”

Seacom believes in a world where the African Internet experience is characterised by abundant local content, minimal latency, fast download and streaming speeds, and interconnected African markets. Today, over a dozen countries across the African continent have access to Seacom’s low cost products and services via its extended network.

On 22 April 2011
Intelsat S.A., the world’s leading provider of fixed satellite services, announced that Arianespace successfully launched the Intelsat New Dawn satellite. The Ariane 5 vehicle lifted off from Kourou, French Guiana, at 5:37 p.m. (EDT), followed by spacecraft separation from the launch vehicle at 6:12 p.m. and signal acquisition at 6:29 p.m.
The Intelsat New Dawn satellite is owned by a joint venture between a consortium led by Convergence Partners and Intelsat. The satellite’s 28 C-band and 24 Ku-band 36 MHz transponder units are designed specifically to supply critical communications infrastructure for African customers, who have experienced exceptional growth along with the development of the region.
Operating from a geostationary orbital slot at 32.8° East, Intelsat New Dawn will be ideally positioned to serve Africa through a payload optimized to deliver new capacity for voice, wireless backhaul, fixed line and wireless infrastructure, broadband and media– the fastest growing satellite-based applications in Africa.
Andile Ngcaba, Chairman of Convergence Partners, said, “The satellite will not only deliver crucial services specifically tailored for Africa, it will also herald the dawn of a new era where Africans enjoy far greater involvement in the space communications industry.”
Intelsat New Dawn is the first of eight satellites slated for launch over the next two years and is part of the largest satellite program in Intelsat’s history. The investment program is expected to provide enhanced high-powered capacity to Intelsat’s global fleet. Intelsat’s next launch is expected to be the Intelsat 18 satellite, slated for later in 2011.

On 15 July 2010, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (“NTT”) Dimension Data Holdings plc (“Dimension Data” or “DiData”) announced that they have reached agreement on the terms of a cash offer to be made by NTT for 100% of Dimension Data. The offer, totalling approximately GBP 2.1 billion (R24.4 billion), was unanimously recommended by both Boards of Directors. Andile Ngcaba, Chairman of Dimension Data’s Middle East and Africa business (“DDMEA”), as well as of its minority shareholder Convergence Partners, is excited about the deal and how its positions DiData in his region. “With access to the resources, products and R&D of the NTT Group, DDMEA is better positioned than ever to grow its presence and capitalise on new and fast growing market opportunities, such as cloud computing.

NTT, one of the largest global telecommunications service providers in the world, has limited presence in certain emerging markets where Dimension Data is very strong, specifically Africa and the Middle East. The transaction is a huge vote of confidence in DiData, South African and Africa, and the rationale of both parties is to capitalise on the significant growth opportunities that are unfolding.

Andile Ngcaba, Chairman of Dimension Data’s Middle East and Africa business (“DDMEA”), as well as of its minority shareholder Convergence Partners, is excited about the deal and how its positions DiData in this region. “With access to the resources, products and R&D of the NTT Group, DDMEA is better positioned than ever to grow its presence and capitalise on new and fast growing market opportunities, such as cloud computing. The deal is great for the country and the company”.

Convergence Partners recently visited Washington, DC and had the opportunity to spend time with New Dawn joint venture partner, Intelsat, and to see the New Dawn craft in advanced stages of construction, at the premises of craft manufacturer, Orbital Sciences Corporation. David Frankel of Altirah Capital, partner in the New Dawn venture, joined Convergence Partners’ Chairman, Andile Ngcaba, and Executive, Idan Segal.

New Dawn is a joint venture between Intelsat, the global leader in fixed satellite services, and an African consortium led by Convergence Partners, to create a new geostationary communications satellite for Africa. This first of its kind venture has a 25% African shareholding and is more than 90% financed by African institutions, including Nedbank, The African Development Bank and the Industrial Development Corporation.

The satellite is due for completion during Q4 2010, at which time it will be delivered to the launch site in French Guiana. Launch is scheduled for Q1 2011, whereafter the satellite will commence operating, providing much needed capacity for the African telecommunications and broadcasting sectors.

After the tour, Andile Ngcaba, said “it is both fascinating and very rewarding to see the physical New Dawn craft, after so many years of conceptualising and planning. I have no doubt it will make a difference to the continuing African growth story”.

Having attended the Mobile World Congress, the largest global telecoms conference (attended by 49,000 visitors from 200 countries) in Barcelona this year, the following 10 key trends and developments came to the fore.

Having attended the Mobile World Congress, the largest global telecoms conference (attended by 49,000 visitors from 200 countries) in Barcelona this year, the following 10 key trends and developments came to the fore.

The 10 major developments at MWC were:

Groupe Speciale Mobile Association (“GSMA”) and about 15 major operators have signed up to create an application planet where there will be a common platform that will allow application developers in the Symbian world to operate across networks and geographies (i.e. a challenge to Apple’s dominance in the apps space);

The affordability of smartphones are becoming a reality, with estimates that by 2015 approximately 50% of mobile phones will be smartphones. This will require larger amounts of backhaul bandwidth for the mobile networks. Once smart phones reach 70% of the market, they will be the single largest access device to the internet;

Mobile operators see device-to-device connectivity as the next revenue opportunity in the mobile space. These data flows are viewed as a mechanism to bolster declining voice ARPUs;

Green technology, especially in the data centre environment and the growth of cloud computing, is a major trend that will accelerate in the coming years;

The growth of smart devices on one side and sophisticated cloud computing on the other will drive growth in “intelligent pipes” in between them. This reinforces the case for increased access to fibre optic networks;

Here is a thought, as you go to a restaurant to have coffee or food when you pay with your credit card and you are given a receipt. Use your smartphone with high-resolution camera to take a photo of the receipt and store it or send it to your private data vault. Intelligent systems in the cloud will then collate and reconcile receipts and expense claims automatically.

In my view LTE is 3+ years away. No handsets are widely available. While people are talking about LTE trials, large scale deployments are still some way off, however, the hype is here. This is another reason why we need backhaul bandwidth now so that when LTE is implemented there are enough pipes to support this infrastructure;

Africa will continue to use mobile devices as the primary means to access the cloud;

Africa must develop its own applications that are specific to Africa’s needs. Including its own social network platforms that will address Africa’s unique lifestyles;

In conclusion, the communications ecosystem is evolving, but it is not clear which organisations will be absorbed by black holes or collide with each other to create new planets in our ecosystem. The ICT ecosystem at one level and the DNA of organisations and companies at another, will fundamentally change in the next ten years.
