FibreCo Telecommunications, a joint venture between Cell C, Convergence Partners and Internet Solutions, has passed the halfway mark of the first link of its R5-billion national fibre-optic broadband network. The company said that the construction of 600 km of the targeted 1 000 km stretch from Johannesburg, through Bloemfontein, to East London has been completed.

FibreCo Telecommunications deploys Corning Optical fibre in South Africa

FibreCo Telecommunications, a South African open-access network provider, is deploying Corning optical fibre in its new long-distance fibre optic network in South Africa. The optical fibre cable contains both Corning SMF-28e+ LLand LEAF optical fibres. Phase 1 of FibreCo’s construction began with a 2,000-km link between Johannesburg and Cape Town connecting Bloemfontein, East London, and Port Elizabeth. The subsequent phases of the project will see additional routes being built to enhance network redundancy and resilience. The project’s total distance will cover 12,000 km.

FibreCo breaks ground on its fibre optic cable network

At a sod turning held today in Bloemfontein, FibreCo Telecommunications (FibreCo) broke-ground to start the construction phase of its much anticipated long-distance fibre optic network, which is set to revolutionise telecommunications in South Africa. The Company will invest up to R5 billion in infrastructure over the next five years, with a vision of ultimately building a network of over 12,000 km.
Construction has commenced on a 2,000 km link between Johannesburg and Cape Town, to be connected through Bloemfontein, East London and Port Elizabeth, and providing access to a wide range of rural and smaller urban areas along the route.

Arif Hussain, CEO of FibreCo, a Convergence Partners investee, used his 40th birthday as an opportunity to raise more than R50,000 towards Save the Rhino International. As a result, Arif’s efforts were profiled in on the Save the Rhino’s facebook page. The theme of the evening was centred around this great cause, including a special rhino cake!

Convergence Partners successfully participated as a sponsor and exhibitor at the 14th annual AfricaCom Conference, held in Cape Town on 9 and 10 November 2011. AfricaCom is the largest communications conference and exhibition on the Continent, gathering together more than 5,000 telecoms decision-makers. This is the second year that Convergence Partners has exhibited at the conference.
Exhibiting on the Convergence Partners’ stand was Comsol, FibreCo, Plessey and SEACOM with each of the companies presenting their offerings in the communications infrastructure space.
