Convergence Partners investee and wireless specialist company Comsol has invested in legally acquiring national spectrum through ICASA, allowing it to deliver carrier grade licensed wireless solutions to the market. Comsol understands the legalities and processes involved in offering a service that is fully compliant, while still being agile enough to meet the market’s demands.
Internet Solutions has rolled out one of the largest next generation LMDS networks in Africa using Intracom Telecom’s innovative point-to-multi-point wireless system, supplied and installed by Communication Solutions (Comsol). The new platform will enhance Internet Solutions’ network coverage and offer high-quality, reliable broadband services to its corporate subscribers in South Africa. The solution design and supply was undertaken by Comsol, a company with a proven track record in a comprehensive range of services in wireless networking.
Convergence Partners congratulates Comsol CEO, Iain Stevenson, for committing once again to get the finisher’s badge in the 2012 Dakar race. Unfortunately, Iain suffered a fall on stage 8 in the 2011 Dakar earlier this year and had to withdraw from the race.
This time around however, he brings National Enduro champion, Chris Birch (Comsol-AlfieCox-KTM) with him.
When the competing fleet of 11-strong crews of professional sailors dock in Cape Town harbour after up to 22 days on the open sea, Convergence Partners’ investee companies, Dimension Data, Internet Solutions and Comsol, have exclusivity in providing connectivity for the race fleet while it is docked in the Mother City port for repairs and re-stocking. The Cape Town leg of the race will take place in early December
Convergence Partners successfully participated as a sponsor and exhibitor at the 14th annual AfricaCom Conference, held in Cape Town on 9 and 10 November 2011. AfricaCom is the largest communications conference and exhibition on the Continent, gathering together more than 5,000 telecoms decision-makers. This is the second year that Convergence Partners has exhibited at the conference.
Exhibiting on the Convergence Partners’ stand was Comsol, FibreCo, Plessey and SEACOM with each of the companies presenting their offerings in the communications infrastructure space.
Rico du Pessis, Chief Operating Officer of Communications Solutions (Comsol), argues that local loop unbundling will contribute to improving the competitive communications landscape in South Africa, but the process to ensure this happens may be through the courts and not the regulator.
This is important not only for wireless companies, but all South Africans passionate about getting cheaper connectivity to all. Rico says: “the legislative framework exists for ECS and ECNS license holders to get wholesale and non-discriminatory access to the local loop, as well as other facilities, (like masts, poles and radio apparatus) yet I feel that it will take a court action before we will see broad application of this process.”
CEO and founder of Convergence Partners’ investee company, Iain Stevenson from Communication Solutions (Comsol) participates in the Dakar Rally in support of the Cipla Miles for Smiles charity and hopes to give many smiles back to kids. For each R5500 that he collects, a child will receive reconstructive facial surgery.
Unfortunately, Iain suffered a fall on stage 8 of the Dakar and had to withdraw from the race.
AfricaCom, the Continent’s premier communications event, took place in Cape Town on 10 and 11 November. Chairman Andile Ngcaba was a featured speaker on day 1, highlighting the opportunities & challenges facing ICT investors in Africa, and the Convergence Partners Group was proud to unveil its new stand (see pictures attached) – the first time we have exhibited at the event. The rationale behind this was to showcase the many young and exciting companies in the Group and give them access to the burgeoning African communications market, as represented by over 5000 attendees over the two days.
The Convergence Partners stand was a hive of activity for the duration of the event (especially when our gorgeous ladies served up some great cocktails at the end of day 1). Companies in the Convergence Partners stand that were formally exhibiting at AfricaCom included Seacom, Convergence Wireless Networks (comprising WiA and Intra), Intelsat New Dawn Satellite Project, Plessey, Comsol, Integrat, Skillpod Media, Bloodhound, Inala, Convergence Border Management Solutions, as well as the Convergence Partners Foundation.
AfircaCom also coincided with the media launch of Convergence Partners’ latest project, FibreCo (see below blog).
